I just heard about another restaurant in Missoula that offers gluten free items. The Catalyst Cafe & Espresso Bar has their GF items marked on the menu and they offer GF toast and english muffins. I can't wait to give them a try the next time in Missoula.
The Catalyst is located at 111 N Higgins Ave and can be reached at 406-542-1337.

A reader (thanks Mark!) sent me an e-mail about a new restaurant in Missoula that has a gluten free menu. It is Blue Bison Grill located in the histroic Stockman's bar at 123 W. Front St.
Their waitress is gluten free and has helped build the menu and practices for safely serving gluten free food.
If you haven't tried them yet be sure to stop in!
They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-10pm. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

More GF Restaurants, Bozeman & Missoula
We have a couple more gluten free restaurants across this fine state.
Buffalo Bump Pizza located at Four Corner's near Bozeman now offers a GF crust and soy cheese for those that can't do dairy. I haven't talked with them about practices to avoid cross contamination but I did sample the pizza at a friend's house the other week and it was really good. They are located at 28901 Norris Rd.
In Missoula The Mustard Seed Asian Cafe now offers a gluten free menu. I have no idea how much it offers or how careful they are with cross contamination but I wanted to share the news. If you have a chance to try them or talk to them please share any information. They are located in the Southgate Mall.
Another Missoula gem is Bernice's Bakery that will do gluten free if you call ahead. I'm not sure what they offer or how much notice you need to give them so again if you have more information please share!

Missoula Updates
We have been on the go and that's why I've been neglecting the blog, sorry! I'm also off to a funeral in South Dakota so it's going to continue to be quiet around here.
We were in Missoula last weekend and I have some dairy free information for Biga Pizza. They do not have dairy free cheese available but they welcome people bringing in their own cheese and they will put it on the pizza for you. That or you can go cheeseless like we did and the pizza was still good.
I also saw some new items at The Good Food Store including New Grist and Bard's beer. Nice to see they are carrying Bard's again. They also have packaged wheat free items from their bakery, banana bread, brownies, cookies, etc. I get nervous when I see wheat free and not gluten free but the ingredients list was gluten free so we tried their apple bread and it was pretty good. Not all of the items are dairy free but some were GF/DF so be sure to read the label before you buy.

Kettlehouse Brewery, Gluten Free Beer
I spotted this fantastic article online about the Kettlehouse Brewery in Missoula working on a gluten free beer. Yes! They have made a Seeley Axe White (ha!) beer brewed with Sorghum but until they can do testing for gluten proteins in the beer they are stating it's "gluten reduced". I understand them wanting to cover their butts.
I think this is great news and deserves a lot of support from the beer drinking GF community. If you happen to try a glass of it please let me know what you think of the beer and if you have any reactions.
The Kettlehouse Brewery is located at 602 Myrtle Street in Missoula.

Joe's Parkway in Bozeman & Other Updates
I found myself at Joe's Parkway in Bozeman yesterday looking for cheese, they have a great selection by the way, and was pleasantly surprised to see they carry some gluten free products. Here's a list of a few things I spotted and this can be a great resource for the college students since it's just across the street from campus.
Gluten free pastas
Gluten free pizza dough mix
Gluten free bread mix
Kind bars
WOW cookies (The WOW brand is also carried at Bonanza in Billings)
The prices were comparable so if you haven't been in awhile, or ever, stop by. It's a nice local gem. I had to peel myself away from the spice and sauce area, too tempting.
I also wanted to note that Rosauer's Huckleberry Market now carries the Udi's bread and pizza crusts in the frozen section. Hubby and I tried their blueberry muffins and they were good, so good we both ate two instead of the planned one. Their webpage states that The Co-op carries their stuff along with Rosauer's in Missoula and Good Earth Market in Billings.

Biga Pizza Missoula, MT Review

A couple weeks ago DH and I journeyed to Spokane to see my favorite band, Built to Spill, play at the Knitting Factory. On our way we stayed in Missoula and stopped by Biga Pizza to try out their GF pizza crust. When I initially found out about Biga Pizza I e-mailed them to ask about cross contamination and here’s the post with their response. Hubby had called to reserve us a crust (recommended by the owner) and we hungrily sat down looking forward to some GF pizza. First off I really liked the restaurant, it has a great local feel to it and we sat at the counter and were able to watch them make all of the pizzas and bake them in the oven. This was nice because I was able to keep an eye on their methods to avoid cross contamination and I was pleased with the process. Hubby and I ordered the Flathead Cherry (house made spicy Italian sausage, cherry chutney, smoked gouda, mozzarella, garlic oil & parsley) and it was awesome. I could have eaten that whole pizza myself. The crust was also fantastic, crisp and not chewy at all. This is by far the best GF pizza we’ve had at a restaurant and probably that we’ve had period.
The pictures don't do it justice since they're from my phone.

The crust used is by Sis’s Kitchen, it’s a rice crust and you can buy it frozen at The Good Food Store. I made it at home several months ago and it wasn’t as good as Biga Pizza’s but I think using my BEST pizza process it would be very close.
I highly recommend Biga Pizza, it’s going to be our new regular stop when we’re visiting family. I can hardly wait to go back in February. They’re located at 241 West Main Street and here’s the phone number to call ahead to reserve your GF crust, (406) 728-2579.
Next week I'll have GF reviews in Spokane.

Gluten Fun
The past few days have been filled with gluten, purposefully and not. My boy was accidentally glutened at a friend’s house after she tried so hard to have safe options for him. She had bought him Barbara’s wheat free Snackimals thinking they were safe because they said wheat free not realizing that they are not gluten free. This just brings up an annoyance I have when things are wheat free but not gluten free, the confusion is frustrating! My boy didn’t have the effects until the next afternoon when his tummy was hurting him and he spent some time on the toilet. I don’t know if giving him Pepto helps or not but I always do, it may just be a placebo effect because he thinks it makes him better.
Hubby went to an allergist yesterday and has decided to do the gluten challenge so he can be tested for Celiac disease. We had to actually brain storm to figure how he could get gluten into his system, how sad is that? He has his own cereal, bread, cookies, crackers, and beer. He’s excited to have things that he hasn’t been able to enjoy but he claims no matter what the results are he’s going to stick with a GF diet. His plan is to eat gluten for 4-6 weeks and then take the test. If he keeps ingesting as much as he did yesterday I think 4 weeks will be plenty. He had a hard time finding cookies and crackers that didn’t have HFCS in them so he still had to read labels, hehe!
I have a work conference this week and I’ve stated I need GF meals so we’ll see how it goes. I am bringing snacks just in case but I’m hopeful I won’t need them. We are then heading to Missoula for the weekend and I’ve found a gluten free pizza place in town. Biga Pizza has a rice crust that is gluten free. They cook it on an oiled pizza pan so it doesn’t come into contact with the deck and it is also sliced with a different pizza wheel. I hope to give them a try and was told to call ahead and reserve one in advance as they tend to sell out quickly. They also have salads just say no toast points or that you have a gluten allergy.
