At Home EZ Gluten Test

My package of EZ Gluten test strips arrived yesterday and I couldn't wait to give them a try. The directions are very clear and it seems like a lot at first but it's easy and made me feel like I was back in Chemistry class. In fact I enjoyed doing these tests so much that I did three of them and plan to do another tonight.
This is what the packet contains, don't let it intimidate you, it's a lot of fun.
The first thing I wanted to test was the Trix Swirls. The directions state you need to wash your hands and work on a clean surface. If what your testing isn't already finely ground, like a flour, then you need to grind it up. They include a measuring spoon to scoop the food sample.
Place the food sample in the vial with the testing solution, put the lid on and shake that puppy for two minutes. You can see the Trix Rabbit is excited about the results.

The solution needs to sit and settle for five minutes before pipetting the liquid and placing 10 drops in the test tube.

Put the EZ Gluten test strip in the solution and walk away for 10 minutes.

You can see from the test strip for the Trix Swirls they are gluten free, woot!

I didn't know what else to test so Hubby suggested his Extra gum. I was pretty sure it was GF and didn't know if testing gum would work but I gave it a try.

The results show Extra gum is gluten free!

I felt like a pro at this point so I decided to test a Post cereal and grabbed the Fruity Pebbles.

You can see from this picture that the test results came back negative for gluten, another win!

Even though these test strips aren't cheap I'm glad I bought them and was able to put my mind at ease. That alone is worth the cost.

Cinnamon Chex and Trix Swirls

I have found Cinnamon Chex in Bozeman, ah sweet cereal! If you haven't tried them already they have a nice sweetness to them with a great cinnamon flavor. You can get them at Van's IGA located at 912 Nth 7th Ave.

I've also discovered that Trix Swirls don't have any gluten containing ingredients and is also free of HFCS. My boy has really been enjoying them for breakfast.

It's nice to have different options for cereal to give my kids, I'm so glad they can still enjoy the fun cereals and not feel like they're left out for being GF. Always be sure to read the ingredients list if it doesn't state GF on the box, better to be safe than sorry.

Chocolate Chex & Honey Nut Chex

I, I, love, love, honey, honey, chex, chex, better, better, than, than, the, the, rest, rest, rice, rice, corn, corn, we, we, want more…! Well it’s something like that but I’ve been singing the song all weekend because I found these at Lee & Dad’s IGA.

They are delicious and hubby and I have been enjoying handfuls from the boxes all weekend. In honor of being able to eat these I had to make a dessert and since it was delicious here’s the recipe. It was a great pick me up after a nice hike on Sunday.

Chocolate Chex Treats

¼ C butter
16 oz marshmallows (miniature are easier)
5 C Chocolate Chex cereal

Butter a spatula and 9x13 inch pan, you will need this at the end. Melt the butter in a large sauce pan over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until they are melted and blended with the butter. Stir and cook for an additional two minutes then remove from heat. Add the cereal and stir until coated by the marshmallow mixture. Taking your buttered spatula press the mixture into the buttered pan and holler for your husband when you’re covered in marshmallow that you need a metal spoon, well that’s at least what happened to me. Once it’s cooled cut into squares and enjoy!
They taste a lot better than this picture makes them look, trust me!
